Find Your October 2026 RMNP Permit Requirement

Rocky Mountain National Park requires standard Timed Entry from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October 12, 2026, and Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 18. Outside those hours—or from October 19 onward—no timed-entry reservation is scheduled, though park admission still applies.

Choose your October date, destination, and arrival hour to see the required permit and both release times.

October Requirements Change After October 12 And 18

Rocky Mountain National Park does not have one reservation cutoff for the entire month. The standard park permit ends first, followed six days later by the Bear Lake Road permit.

The National Park Service identifies October 12 as the final scheduled reservation-required day for standard Timed Entry and October 18 as the final scheduled day for Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road. Confirm the future schedule on the NPS timed-entry page before driving.

Timed entry and park admission are separate. A reservation does not include admission, and a day without timed entry is not a free-admission day. You must still present a valid entrance pass or pay the applicable entrance fee.

October 1–12 Can Require Either Permit

For a destination outside Bear Lake Road, standard Timed Entry is required when entering from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. and no timed-entry reservation is scheduled for those areas.

Bear Lake Road has a longer controlled period. Entering that corridor from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. requires Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road. Standard Timed Entry does not provide corridor access.

October 13–18 Only Controls Bear Lake Road

Standard Timed Entry is no longer listed as required outside Bear Lake Road during these six days. A noon arrival elsewhere in the park therefore does not require the standard permit under the published operational schedule.

Bear Lake Road remains controlled from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. A noon corridor arrival still requires Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road.

October 19–31 Has No Scheduled Timed Entry

October 19 is the first date on which neither permit is listed as required. That applies both to Bear Lake Road and the rest of the park.

This does not guarantee that every road, parking area, or trailhead will be accessible. Weather, closures, parking operations, fire restrictions, and emergency measures can change separately from timed entry.

The Bear Lake Road Permit Covers More Of The Park

The two reservation products are not interchangeable. Standard Timed Entry excludes the Bear Lake Road Corridor. Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road includes the corridor and the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park.

The permit coverage, controlled hours, and two-hour arrival windows appear in the NPS 2026 timed-entry announcement.

If Bear Lake Road is part of the itinerary, select Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road rather than the standard product. The reservation holder must enter both Rocky Mountain National Park and the Bear Lake Road Corridor during the assigned two-hour window. Reaching the main entrance within that window is not enough if you reach the corridor after it closes.

For example, with an 8–10 a.m. Bear Lake Road window, entering the park at 9:45 a.m. but reaching the corridor after 10 a.m. does not satisfy the stated corridor-entry requirement. Allow driving and entrance-line time inside the window.

October Reservations Open September 1

Reservations for eligible October 1–18 dates are scheduled to open on September 1, 2026, at 8 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Inventory is first-come, first-served and may sell out.

Limited additional inventory is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT on the evening before each eligible arrival date. For an October 8 visit, for example, that second release is October 7 at 7 p.m. MDT. It is another opportunity rather than a guarantee that a suitable window will remain available.

Reservations are made through the Recreation.gov RMNP timed-entry page, its mobile app, or its authorized reservation phone service. They are not sold at park entrances or visitor centers.

Check the date, product, and two-hour window before completing the booking. A standard Timed Entry reservation will not provide access to Bear Lake Road.

If a reservation is unavailable, the published off-hours alternatives are:

• Outside Bear Lake Road, enter before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m.
• For Bear Lake Road, enter the corridor before 5 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
• From October 19 onward, neither timed-entry product is listed as required.

All stated release times use MDT. Travelers booking from another time zone must convert from Mountain Daylight Time rather than assuming 8 a.m. or 7 p.m. in their local zone.

A Two-Hour Window Controls Arrival, Not Visit Length

A timed-entry reservation assigns a two-hour arrival window. It does not limit the visit itself to two hours or impose a scheduled departure time.

Someone entering an area outside Bear Lake Road at 8 a.m. on October 8 does not need standard Timed Entry and does not have to leave when the controlled period begins at 9 a.m. The same principle applies to entering Bear Lake Road before 5 a.m.

Early arrival does not reserve parking, keep a road open, or guarantee access to a trailhead. A timed-entry reservation provides none of those guarantees either.

If you miss a standard permit window, consult the current official instructions rather than assuming a universal grace period. The published guidance does not establish one missed-window outcome for every permit and circumstance.

The Bear Lake Road instructions are more specific: a traveler who misses the reserved corridor window may be directed to return after 2 p.m. That should not be treated as a promise that every late arrival will be admitted then.

The Reservation Costs $2 And Covers One Vehicle

Each timed-entry reservation carries a non-refundable $2 Recreation.gov processing fee. The fee purchases only the reservation; it does not include park admission.

One reservation covers one vehicle and its occupants. Passengers arriving together in one car do not each need separate timed-entry reservations. The named reservation holder must be present with photo identification, and reservations are described as non-transferable and non-refundable.

An annual, senior, or other qualifying entrance pass does not replace timed entry. The entrance pass addresses admission, while the reservation controls entry by date, destination, and arrival time.

Before leaving your lodging, have the following available:

• The timed-entry confirmation, if the itinerary requires one
• Photo identification for the named reservation holder
• A valid entrance pass or a method of paying admission
• A current check of park alerts, roads, closures, and weather

Keep the confirmation accessible without relying on mobile service at the checkpoint.

Bear Lake Road Re-Entry Is Restricted Until After 2 P.M.

A Bear Lake Road reservation does not provide unrestricted movement in and out of the corridor throughout the day. After leaving the corridor, same-day re-entry is allowed only after 2 p.m., according to the NPS timed-entry guidance.

A driver who enters Bear Lake Road during a 7–9 a.m. window, leaves at 10:30 a.m., and tries to return at noon should not treat the original reservation as authorization for that return. Complete the corridor portion before leaving or plan to return after 2 p.m.

The permit authorizes vehicle entry but does not reserve a parking space. An itinerary should not depend on a particular lot being available merely because the vehicle has a valid reservation.

The Official End-Date Wording Differs

The detailed operational information says standard reservations are required through October 12 and Bear Lake Road reservations are required through October 18. A separate NPS 2026 news release says the systems “end” October 13 and October 19.

The date-by-date operational reading is:

• October 12: Final scheduled required day for standard Timed Entry
• October 13: Standard Timed Entry is no longer listed as required
• October 18: Final scheduled required day for Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road
• October 19: Bear Lake Road timed entry is no longer listed as required

The announcement appears to identify the dates on which the systems end, while the detailed schedule identifies the last controlled dates. For an October 13 or October 19 visit, verify the live listings before departure in case the wording or operating plan changes.

A permit decision does not settle road or destination access. Within 48 hours of driving, check current RMNP alerts and operating conditions, including roads, weather, closures, parking information, and fire restrictions. A valid reservation cannot override a closure or make an inaccessible destination available.
